“I’m not enough.” Is that something you’ve said to yourself? Many of us have. This feeling can creep in for a variety of reasons. Past failures or traumas like not making the team you were trying out for, getting passed up for a job or promotion, or being rejected are a few examples. It could be words ringing in your head from a person you care about criticizing your abilities or putting you down. Whether it’s not feeling smart enough, pretty enough, worthy enough, savvy enough, confident enough or something else, the truth is that YOU ARE ENOUGH exactly the way you are. Here are six tips to combat not feeling enough.

  1. Stop comparing – don’t get caught up in people’s social media highlight reel. Theodore Roosevelt said, “comparison is the thief of joy.” He’s right! The only person you should be worried about comparison with is yourself. Focus on being better than you were yesterday – that will keep you motivated.
  2. Stay present – being stuck in past disappointments will not serve you. Whatever didn’t work out is already history. You can’t change the past. Appreciate the here and now. If there are past events you need help getting over, reach out to a professional like a therapist for support.
  3. Be curious and creative – learning and fun will keep you in a positive vibration. Do activities that you enjoy or try something new. When you spend time doing what you love and are in a mindset of learning, endorphins kick in. You can’t feel like you’re not enough when you are having fun.
  4. Celebrate your wins – recognize your progress and what you’re grateful for. Wins happen every day. Consider keeping a gratitude journal or having a gratitude partner that you exchange sharing wins with. The habit of gratitude reminds you of what you’ve gained and how you are growing.
  5. Embrace the lessons – when you know where you can improve, you can do better. When things don’t work out, they are opportunities to grow. Don’t let mistakes or failures bring you down. Fail forward and know that things will only keep getting better with time and experience.
  6. Connect with healthy communities – surround yourself with people who uplift you and will help you thrive. Choose SAVERs – people who support you, are aligned with you, value-add to your life, elevate you, and rise with you to be in your life. These people will never let you feel like you’re not enough!
