Politics is divisive. It can also be paralyzing because of the pervasively negative climate. The finger pointing, name calling, and accusations can cause people to tune out or worse, produce more negativity.

So, how do you positively contribute to a negative political environment? Here are a couple of suggestions to consider:

Limit the time you spend watching the news. The media loops the same devastating or controversial stories that evoke anxiety, anger, and depression. Don’t get sucked into the sensationalism.

Leverage non-partisan, unbiased news sources. It doesn’t mean stop reading or watching your “go-to” news sources but mix it up. (e.g., https://www.thefactual.com/ or https://www.theskimm.com/ ). Focus on facts to help you better formulate or strengthen your perspective.

Research candidates and vote. Take time to go to the websites of political candidates and do research on them to understand who best aligns with your beliefs and vote accordingly. Don’t let social media and fear-mongering people be your primary source of information.

Contribute to the causes you care about. Money could be one way, but your time is even more valuable. Whether it’s education, immigration, social justice, or something else, learn about relevant causes & organizations and find meaningful ways to engage and contribute.

Share solutions and ideas. Be problem-solver oriented by sharing your suggestions with local, state, or federal leaders through channels found on their websites. Consider writing an op ed piece in a credible source. Promoting solutions is more productive than perpetuating problems.

What ways are you showing up in this political climate? I’d love to hear what other thoughts and ideas you have.
