Have you ever heard that when it rains it pours or bad things come in threes? It’s been that kind of few days for me. It’s certainly been a test of my resilience and tenacity. I’ve been turning quite a few lemons into lemonade.

Let’s start with situation # 1 – the travel blues. I had a flight booked from Las Vegas to Detroit for a key client executive meeting that needed to get changed a couple of times. I was on a red eye flight in a middle seat between two large men. Needless to say, my sleep was sub-par. Next up, when I got to the rental car counter, I had no reservation because the travel agency booked the wrong dates. I was able to rent a car, although a jeep was far from necessary. I drove in a zombie-like state for about 90 minutes to my hotel. When I arrived, I learned that my reservation was cancelled because I didn’t arrive by 2 am. Lovely. With it being Michigan football weekend, remaining room reservations required a 2-night stay and prices hiked up to $300 per night (for a room that is usually $125). It would cost me $600+ for a room that I only needed for no more than 3 hours. I ended up getting ready in the hotel lobby bathroom. The lemonade is that I put my head in the game and crushed my client meeting.

Moving on to situation #2 – the documentation devil. If you’ve ever purchased a home, you know it requires the submission of lots of documents to a lender (if you’re obtaining a loan). Buying an investment property means the process is even more rigorous. I spent my Saturday digging up a treasure trove of documents. This is the 5th time I’ve gone through a home purchase process and given our current real estate market; it has been the most grueling. It was important for me to prioritize this process despite having to push back my long list of to-dos. The lemonade was my partner being a phenomenal support system and reminding me that all our hard work will pay off.

Situation # 3 – the money pit. If you’ve ever sold a house, you know that there are a lot of things that go into getting it ready for re-sale. I can’t get into the details too much but can just say that this deal is the costliest one I’ve ever worked on. I must throw in that my football team, the 49ers played poorly today so that just threw another lemon into the day. The lemonade is that I got to spend quality time with my family today and I have a sincere appreciation for my entire real estate team who has been working tirelessly on both my sale and purchase to get these deals across the finish line.

What’s the punch line? Life is always going to throw you lemons. Instead of letting those lemons make you sour, make lemonade! There were multiple times over the past three days where I wanted to throw in the towel, fall asleep and just forget about everything, or hop on a plane and escape to some other reality. Instead, I let myself process my feelings, remained solution-oriented, turned to people I trust for support, and stayed focused on the bigger picture. I’m determined to keep moving forward and make it a marvelous week.

What’s one of your recent lemonade stories?
