When I moved to Las Vegas, NV from the Bay Area (California) in August of 2021, I was in decent shape and felt good about my health. As the months went by, my routine became a drastic contrast to what I was previously used to. I was eating at all hours of the day, eating anything and everything my heart desired without reservation, had a sporadic sleep schedule, and had no consistent exercise schedule. Clothes started feeling a little bit tighter. Each time I went to the doctor’s office and the scale showed me a weight a little higher than the previous visit, I was convinced it was the scale that had to be broken. The scale wasn’t broken, my routine was.
In January of 2023, I turned the milestone age of 40. I had an epic celebration and was feeling very excited about the next decade of my life. I couldn’t help but think though that I lost my father when he was 40 years old because he did not take care of his health. His death was 100% preventable. I couldn’t sit idle doing the same thing expecting different results. I decided in the Spring to join a 6-week transformation program which involved kickboxing a minimum of 3x per week, following a specific meal plan, and taking supplements to support my overall health. I lost 20 lbs. and a month later I lost 5 more lbs. One decision led to a version of me I felt proud to become.
What did this health and fitness journey teach me?
- There are no short cuts – transformation doesn’t happen with a magic pill or potion. It takes commitment, accountability, consistency, and grit EVERYDAY, not just some days.
- Your environment matters – this is especially true about people. You either have anchors or sails in your life. Anchors will weigh you down. Sails will propel you forward.
- Lifestyle is dictated by your daily habits – what you consume for your mind, body, and spirit is a direct reflection of the outcomes you achieve. Good inputs = good outputs and vice versa.
- There’s no place for complacency in growth – when you reach a goal, there is always another one in store. Just listen to Never Finished by David Goggins and you’ll know what I mean.
- You own your destiny – responsibility and accountability in any change starts with YOU. It’s not about what other people think or want. Decide what you want and stay relentlessly focused.
The first step in a transformational journey is always the hardest. Getting out of your own head is the biggest block. Commit to taking the first action step and I guarantee, you’ll figure out the rest!
